Entertainment Before Video Games: How People Had Fun

Before video games became ubiquitous, leisure time looked very different across ages and eras—but creativity and social connection were always central.

Children's Play

  • Outdoor Games: Tag, hide-and-seek, hopscotch, jump rope, capture the flag, building forts.
  • Board & Card Games: Monopoly, Checkers, Chess, Uno, Go Fish, Old Maid.
  • Reading & Storytelling: Library visits, comic books, family read-alouds, making up stories.
  • Hobbies & Crafts: Drawing, model kits (airplanes, cars), stamp/coin collecting, friendship bracelets.
  • Simple Toys: Dolls, action figures, toy cars, blocks, stuffed animals—powered by imagination.

Adult Leisure

  • Social Gatherings: Dinner parties, dances, community events, church socials.
  • Movies & Theater: Cinema outings, drive-ins, local theater productions.
  • Radio & Music: Listening to serial dramas, news, baseball games, top-40 countdowns.
  • Active Hobbies: Gardening, fishing, woodworking, cooking, playing instruments.
  • Sports: Playing in leagues (softball, bowling) or spectating (high school, pro).
  • Reading: Novels, magazines, newspapers, encyclopedias.

Key Differences from Today

  • More Physical Activity: Less sedentary screen time; play was often active.
  • Greater Reliance on Creativity: Games were invented, adapted, and negotiated in real time.
  • Stronger Face-to-Face Bonds: Social interaction required physical presence.

It wasn't "better" or "worse"—just a different balance of priorities, with entertainment rooted in tangible, shared experiences.
