High School Diploma Required for Game Design? Not Strictly—Skills & Portfolio Matter Most

Not strictly. The industry values skills + portfolio over credentials.

Paths Without a Diploma

  • Self-taught: Unity/Unreal tutorials (Brackeys, Game Maker's Toolkit), C#/C++ courses (freeCodeCamp, Coursera).
  • Bootcamps: 12–24 week intensive (GameDev.tv, CG Spectrum).
  • Apprenticeships / QA → Design: Entry-level testing → internal transfer.
  • Modding / indie projects: Ship a small game on itch.io/Steam.

Core Skills Employers Want

  • Programming (C#, C++, Python).
  • Engine mastery (Unity, Unreal, Godot).
  • Systems design, level design, UX, economy balancing.
  • Version control (Git), Agile/Scrum basics.

The Portfolio Rule

Show, don't tell. A playable prototype > degree. Many designers have no degree; few have no portfolio.
