How to Fix a Broken Video Game – Software Crashes, Hardware Issues & Save Corruption

Software Issues (Crashes, Bugs, Glitches)

  1. Update: Steam/EA App/Epic → Verify Integrity / Repair.
  2. GPU Drivers: Clean install latest (DDU + new).
  3. Delete Config/Cache: %AppData%, Documents/My Games, shader caches.
  4. Disable Mods/Overlays: Discord, GeForce Experience, MSI Afterburner, RTSS.
  5. Compatibility Mode: Win7/8, Admin, DPI override.
  6. Reinstall: Fresh install on SSD; backup saves first.

Hardware Issues (Disc / Cartridge / Console)

  • Disc scratches: Resurface (local game store, $3–$5) or toothpaste micro-polish (last resort).
  • Cartridge pins: Clean with 99% IPA + fiber-free swab; reflow solder if cracked (advanced).
  • Console: Dust cleaning, thermal paste replacement, capacitor recap (vintage).

Save Corruption

  • Restore from cloud (Steam Cloud, PS Plus, Xbox Cloud).
  • Backup tools: Save Wizard (PS4), JKSV (Switch homebrew), Game Save Manager (PC).

If the game code itself is broken (unpatched bug), wait for developer patch or use community unofficial patches (e.g., Unofficial Skyrim Patch).
