Latin Word for "Video Game": Modern Neologisms Since Classical Latin Has None

Classical Latin has no term for "video game" (20th-century concept). Modern Latinists coin neologisms:

  • Lūdus vīdeōludicus – "video-play game" (vīdeō = "I see", lūdus = "game/play")
  • Lūdus electronicus – "electronic game"
  • Lūdus digitālis – "digital game"
  • Lūdus computātōrius – "computer game"

No single standard exists. The Vatican's Lexicon Recentis Latinitatis (1997) uses lūdus electronicus for "video game."

For a tattoo/motto: Lūdus Vīdeōludicus is descriptive and morphologically sound.
