How Many Players in GTA IV Free Mode? (Single-Player Only)

Grand Theft Auto IV's single-player "Free Mode" (roaming Liberty City outside missions) is strictly single-player only. There is no multiplayer in the main story mode.

Multiplayer in GTA IV

• GTA IV Multiplayer (Disc 2 / Separate Menu): Supports 2–16 players online (Xbox Live / PSN / Games for Windows Live) in modes: Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Race, GTA Race, Cops n Crooks, Deal Breaker, Hangman's NOOSE, Bomb Da Base II, Free Mode (multiplayer).
• Multiplayer Free Mode: Up to 16 players roam together—no missions, just chaos. Separate from story mode.
• Episodes from Liberty City (TLAD / TBoGT): Standalone expansions with their own multiplayer lobbies (16 players).

Platform Notes

• PC (GFWL shutdown 2014): Official MP dead. RAGE:MP / FiveM don't support GTA IV. IV:MP and Liberty Unleashed are community clients—small populations.
• Xbox 360 / PS3: Servers offline (2020+). No official online play.
• Backward Compat (Xbox One/Series): Single-player works; MP servers remain off.

For active GTA multiplayer: Play GTA Online (GTA V) — 30 players/session, constant updates, cross-gen.
