Why Does My PS3 YLOD Only on One Game?

Understanding PS3 YLOD and Game-Specific Crashes

It doesn't. The Yellow Light of Death (YLOD) is a hardware failure (cracked BGA solder joints under the RSX GPU or Cell CPU, or NEC/TOKIN capacitor degradation). A specific game cannot cause YLOD.

What's Likely Happening

SymptomProbable CauseFix
YLOD only when launching Game XGame X pushes GPU/CPU to higher clocks/thermals → exposes existing marginal solder jointsReflow/reball RSX/Cell; replace NEC/TOKIN caps with tantalum
Freeze/crash/black screen (no YLOD) on Game XDisc scratch, corrupted install, save corruption, overheatingClean disc, reinstall game, delete corrupt save, improve ventilation
YLOD randomly, not game-specificGeneral hardware degradationProfessional reball or console replacement

Immediate Steps

  1. Test 3+ other games for 30+ min each. If stable, the console is mostly okay; Game X is just the most demanding.
  2. Clean Game X disc (radial strokes, microfiber).
  3. Delete Game X's Game Data (Game → Triangle → Delete) and reinstall.
  4. Ensure console vents are clear; vacuum dust; replace thermal paste if comfortable (advanced).

Permanent Hardware Fix

  • Reflow (heat gun): Temporary (weeks–months).
  • Reball (BGA rework station): Lasts years; requires pro equipment (~$100–$150 service).
  • NEC/TOKIN Capacitor Replacement: CCELL/CECHA/CECHB/CECHE/CECHG/CECHH/CECHK/CECHL models. Replace 4× 470 µF caps with 4× 330 µF tantalum (e.g., AVX TPSD337M010R0100). Often solves YLOD alone.

Warning: Hair-dryer “fixes” warp the motherboard. Don't bake consoles. If data matters, backup saves to USB/Cloud before any repair attempt.
