How Much Video Games Should You Play Per Day? A Self-Audit Framework

There's no universal number. The "right" amount depends on your life, health, and goals. Here's a framework to decide for yourself.

Key Factors

FactorQuestions to Ask
Age & ResponsibilitiesStudent? Full-time job? Parent? Caregiver? Gaming fits around these.
Physical HealthEye strain? Back pain? Sleep quality? RSI risk? Sedentary time?
Mental HealthMood after playing? Escapism vs. recreation? Anxiety when not playing?
Social LifeReplacing face-to-face time? Or enhancing (co-op with friends)?
Goals & PrioritiesWhat did you not do because you gamed? (Study, exercise, create, sleep)

Evidence-Based Guidelines

  • AAP (kids 6+): Consistent limits; prioritize sleep, activity, school. <1–2 hrs/day on school days.
  • WHO: Gaming Disorder = impaired control, increasing priority, continuation despite harm >12 months.
  • Oxford Internet Institute (2022): <3 hrs/day = neutral/positive well-being for most adults. >6 hrs correlates with lower well-being.

Self-Audit (Do This Weekly)

  1. Track actual hours (Steam/PlayStation/Xbox/Switch profile, or RescueTime).
  2. Rate 1–5: Sleep, Mood, Productivity, Relationships, Physical health.
  3. If 2+ categories dip → cut 30 min/day next week.

Practical Habits

  • Hard stop: Alarm at 90 min → stretch, water, decide continue/stop.
  • No gaming 1 hr before bed (blue light, arousal).
  • Earn it: Workout, chores, study first → guilt-free play.
  • Social > Solo: Co-op with friends beats solo grind for well-being.
  • Variety: Rotate genres (puzzle, strategy, action) to engage different cognition.

Red Flags (Seek Help)

  • Lying about time played.
  • Irritable when not gaming.
  • Neglecting hygiene, meals, work, school.
  • Failed attempts to cut back.
  • Resources: OLGA, CGTC, therapist search "gaming addiction."

Start with 90 minutes/day as a baseline. Adjust up/down based on your audit. You're the expert on your life.
