PS2 Guitar Controllers on PS3: Compatibility Explained

No, PlayStation 2 guitar controllers do not work on PlayStation 3.

Technical Reasons

• Different USB protocols. PS2 guitars use a proprietary USB interface incompatible with the PS3's host controller.
• Wireless mismatch. PS3 rhythm games expect Bluetooth instruments; PS2 guitars are wired or use proprietary dongles.
• Game-side detection. Titles like Guitar Hero III and Rock Band on PS3 explicitly check for PS3-certified hardware IDs.

What Works on PS3

Officially supported PS3 guitars include:

• Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock (Gibson Les Paul / Kramer)
• Guitar Hero World Tour (drum/guitar bundles)
• Rock Band instruments (Fender Stratocaster, drum kit, microphone)

If you're digging out plastic instruments, verify "PS3" on the packaging. PS2 gear belongs in a display case—or a PS2.
